Choosing between Nordic Spruce and Japanese Cedar

Choosing between Nordic Spruce and Japanese Cedar

Both woods perform identically in the sauna; the choice is aesthetic and aromatic. Decision framework included.

Both woods perform identically in the sauna. Same wall thickness, same insulation, same hardware, same heater. The choice is aesthetic and aromatic.

Choose Nordic Spruce if

  • You prefer a clean, light Scandinavian look
  • You want a milder scent during sessions
  • You want the standard wood option

Choose Japanese Cedar if

  • You want the classic warm cedar aroma that intensifies with heat
  • You prefer the warmer reddish-brown tone with pink undertones
  • You value the natural rot resistance from the wood's own oils
  • You appreciate the heritage of Sugi — the wood used in Japanese temples and ofuro baths for over a thousand years

If you've spent time in cedar saunas (gyms, cabins, spas), you'll likely choose cedar for the familiar scent. If you want a clean modern aesthetic with a milder smell, Nordic Spruce is the right pick.
