Wood option: Nordic Spruce
FSC-certified Nordic Spruce — thermally modified for stability and rot resistance, light Scandinavian look, mild scent.
Nordic Spruce is sourced from Norway and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The wood is thermally modified, which means it's heat-treated at high temperatures to alter its physical properties without using chemicals.
- Treatment process
- Thermal modification heats the wood in a controlled chamber to temperatures around 392°F / 200°C. The high heat changes the cell structure, reducing the wood's tendency to absorb moisture, increasing its dimensional stability, and improving rot resistance. The process produces no chemical residues.
- Color
- Light honey-gold tone when new. Untreated wood weathers to a soft silver-grey over years of outdoor exposure. The original tone can be maintained with periodic application of sauna-safe wood oil.
- Aroma when heated
- Mild, clean, slightly sweet. Less pronounced than cedar.
- Thermal behavior
- Low thermal conductivity, which keeps the wood surface comfortable to touch even at high cabin temperatures. The benches don't burn.
- Durability
- The thermal modification provides built-in rot resistance. The wood is dimensionally stable through repeated heat cycling, which is the primary stress on sauna timber.
- Best for
- Buyers who prefer a clean, light Scandinavian aesthetic. Suitable for all climates.
