Medications that affect heat tolerance

Section 14.4Health and safety

Medications that affect heat tolerance

Common drug classes that change how your body handles sauna heat — beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, antihistamines, and more.

Several common medications can change how your body handles sauna heat. Talk to your prescribing doctor before sauna use if you take any of the following:

  • Beta blockers (affect heart rate response)
  • ACE inhibitors and ARBs (affect blood pressure)
  • Diuretics (affect hydration)
  • Antihistamines and anticholinergics (can reduce sweating)
  • Antidepressants and antipsychotics (some affect thermoregulation)
  • Stimulants, including ADHD medications and decongestants (can amplify cardiac response to heat)
  • Insulin or oral diabetes medications (heat can affect blood sugar)

This is not a complete list. Any medication that affects your cardiovascular, hydration, or heat regulation systems may interact with sauna use. Your prescribing doctor is the right person to ask.
