Health and safety
- 14.1 When to consult your doctor before sauna useSpecific health conditions that warrant a doctor consultation before starting regular sauna use.
- 14.2 Alcohol and saunaNever use the sauna while intoxicated or after consuming alcohol. Documented fatalities exist; this is a hard rule.
- 14.3 PregnancyResearch is limited and depends on temperature, duration, and stage. First-trimester sauna is generally not advised. Talk to your obstetrician.
- 14.4 Medications that affect heat toleranceCommon drug classes that change how your body handles sauna heat — beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, antihistamines, and more.
- 14.5 Children and sauna useGeneral age guidelines for kids — no children under 6, conservative protocols for ages 6-17, always with adult supervision.
- 14.6 HydrationThe single most important safety practice. Volumes and signs of dehydration. For full guidance during sessions, see Section 9.5.
- 14.7 Recognizing overheatingEarly signs (leave immediately) vs. more serious signs (seek medical attention) for heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
- 14.8 Cool-down protocolHow to transition from hot sauna to cool environment safely — walk slowly, sit if lightheaded, ease into cold contrast rather than jumping in.
- 14.9 If someone faints in the saunaFive-step emergency protocol if a person loses consciousness in the sauna. When in doubt, call emergency services.
- 14.10 PetsSaunas are not designed for pets. Their thermoregulation is different from humans and the heat is dangerous.
