When to consult your doctor before sauna use

Section 14.1Health and safety

When to consult your doctor before sauna use

Specific health conditions that warrant a doctor consultation before starting regular sauna use.

Talk to your doctor before starting regular sauna use if you have any of the following:

  • Heart disease, including coronary artery disease, recent heart attack, or congestive heart failure
  • High or low blood pressure (especially if uncontrolled)
  • Any history of arrhythmia or pacemaker
  • Pregnancy (see Section 14.3)
  • Diabetes, especially if your blood sugar is unstable
  • Kidney disease
  • Multiple sclerosis or other conditions that affect heat tolerance
  • Any condition that affects your ability to sense heat or sweat normally
  • Recent surgery or active medical recovery
  • Prescribed medications that affect heart rate, blood pressure, or hydration (see Section 14.4)

A doctor familiar with your situation can advise on whether sauna use is appropriate and what frequency and temperature is safe for you.
