When to consult your doctor before sauna use
Specific health conditions that warrant a doctor consultation before starting regular sauna use.
Talk to your doctor before starting regular sauna use if you have any of the following:
- Heart disease, including coronary artery disease, recent heart attack, or congestive heart failure
- High or low blood pressure (especially if uncontrolled)
- Any history of arrhythmia or pacemaker
- Pregnancy (see Section 14.3)
- Diabetes, especially if your blood sugar is unstable
- Kidney disease
- Multiple sclerosis or other conditions that affect heat tolerance
- Any condition that affects your ability to sense heat or sweat normally
- Recent surgery or active medical recovery
- Prescribed medications that affect heart rate, blood pressure, or hydration (see Section 14.4)
A doctor familiar with your situation can advise on whether sauna use is appropriate and what frequency and temperature is safe for you.
